Need input father was alcoholic now he has worse problems?

My dad was an alcoholic for 5+yrs (everyday, all day on the weekends). In May he finally decided to goto rehab to quit and he was successful, but he lost his job. After my dad left rehab they lost their house which put him into depression and suicidal thoughts, so he went to a mental rehab place. About a week before he went there he started to seem different but when we visited and after he got out he was completely different (as in seemed like a child or mentally ill person). He is always scared about “getting in trouble”, today it almost seemed like he had a stroke, his speech was slurred and he seemed to drag with his left side, he does have previous heart problems. He also is paranoid thinking everyone is out to get him. Here is the list of medicines, please any information would be greatly appreciated. Risperdal 2mg, Cymbalta 90mg, Carvedilol 12.5, and trazodone 150mg.

Son, my heart goes out to you… You and your dad have really had quite a tough time over the years. The psychiatric medications he’s taken, i.e. Cymbalta and Risperdal are a very reasonable choice with the symptoms you describe. The Desyrel 150 mg is likely being used for sleep, rather than as an antidepressant. My best advice is to have him see the Psychiatrist regularly so that his medications can be monitored and adjusted as needed. A lot of Psychiatric medications take a while to work, even at a therapeutic dosage. The Psychiatrist could help guide you as to whether adjunctive therapy, e.g. CBT may be of benefit to him.
